This here Rolex GMT-Master II, they call it the “Pepsi,” I reckon. It’s got that red and blue, you know, like that soda pop. Fancy folks, they sure love these things. I seen ’em on the TV, all shiny and whatnot. My grandson, he told me all about it. He’s always on that computer, lookin’ at these fancy watches. He says this one’s a real good one, a classic, whatever that means. Cost a whole heap of money, though. More than my old truck, that’s for sure!
Now, this Rolex GMT-Master II Pepsi, it’s got that round thing on the outside, the bezel, they call it. That’s the red and blue part. Keeps track of time in different places, he says. Good for them rich folks that fly around all over the world. I ain’t never been on no airplane. Don’t need to. Got everything I need right here. But I guess it’s kinda neat, knowin’ what time it is in some other place. Like when my sister, bless her heart, used to call from California. Always had to figure out what time it was there before I picked up the phone.
He says this Rolex, it’s made real good. Strong, like. Last you a lifetime, maybe more. My old watch, bless its heart, it stopped tickin’ years ago. Got it at the five and dime, it was. This Rolex, though, it’s a whole different story. It’s like them cast iron skillets. Heirloom, they say. You pass it down to your kids, and their kids, and so on. Something to remember you by, I suppose. They say this watch is a good investment. Like buying land or gold. Keeps its value. I’ve seen a lot of Rolex watches on TV, they are so popular.
This Pepsi Bezel, it’s real popular, my grandson says. Everybody wants one. ‘Cause it’s a classic, see? Like them old songs they play on the radio. Never go outta style. This here Rolex, it’s like that. Always gonna be somethin’ special. Even if you don’t need to know what time it is in Timbuktu. It’s just… nice. You know? Somethin’ to be proud of. Somethin’ that says you done alright for yourself.
He showed me some other watches, too. Said they was like this Rolex, but not as much money. Good for folks like me, I guess, who ain’t got a fortune to spend. They were called Tudor and Tissot, they are almost the same as Rolex. They looked alright, I suppose. But they ain’t the real thing, you know? Like wearin’ a fake diamond. It might sparkle, but it ain’t the same. This Rolex GMT-Master II is the real deal. Everybody knows it.

This here Rolex GMT-Master II, it’s a symbol, I reckon. Like a gold star in school. Means you made it. You’re somebody. I don’t need no fancy watch to tell me who I am. But I can see why folks like ’em. It’s like havin’ a little piece of a dream, right there on your wrist. A reminder that you can do anything you set your mind to. They are just like some luxury cars, like Mercedes-Benz, BMW, so many people want to get them.
My grandson, he dreams of havin’ one of these Rolex watches someday. He works hard, saves his money. Maybe one day, he’ll get it. And when he does, I’ll be proud as a peacock. ‘Cause that watch, it’ll be more than just somethin’ to tell time. It’ll be a sign that he made his dreams come true. And that’s somethin’ worth more than all the money in the world.
I remember my old man, he had a pocket watch. Gold, it was. Kept it on a chain. Took it out every now and then to check the time. Special occasions, mostly. That watch, it was his pride and joy. He worked hard all his life, just like my grandson. Never had much, but he had that watch. And that watch, it meant somethin’ to him.
